A major revamp has produced a tiny café/takeway which boasts bright green Perspex chairs, snazzy glass and silver lamps and black wood panelling.

Much frequented by local taxi drivers, this place makes me think of the Chinese answer to a greasy spoon café. That's not to denigrate though, for a good greasy spoon can be excellent. My beef and black bean sauce at Wok Oriental the other evening was speedily produced and nicely cooked. It's not greasy either, by the way.

Jasmine tea, which is served here goes down well too, and you can get decent cups of ordinary tea too, another plus point as far as I am concerned.

It's very hard to get authentic Chinese food in Belfast, and so I tend to not frequent takeaways and whatnot.  However, I work very close to Wok Oriental and don't like to eat the same food every day when I get my breaks from the slog, so naturally enough I've been in here a couple of times.

It's basically an ordinary takeaway with a seating area, and actual plates instead of those plastic trays you get.  It's insanely popular with taxi drivers - read into that what you will.

I've tried their squid in black bean sauce - squid being a very easy ingredient to get wrong, and it wasn't that pleasant here of a Sunday evening.  Overcooked and elastic-y, though the rice seemed fresh unlike a lot of microwaved rubbish that's prevalent elsewhere.  I went back though, and had a Peking chicken / sesame affair that was better but not delicious.

If I were very hungry and were stuck for options, I'd eat here.  But there's nothing in Wok Oriental that'd make me look forward to going back.

I've eaten at this little city centre Chinese restaurant only on one occasion but to be honest I was pleasantly surprised. I can't remember for the life of me what was here previously but I think it was another Chinese.

It was absolutely dead on the wet Friday early evening I called in but none the less the food was top notch. I had a fried rice dish, I think it was Yeung Chow as far as I can recall. Cheap, cheerful, friendly and quick. It's a nice bright and airy place inside and although it's no 'fancy' or probably somewhere you'd want to spend a great deal of time, if you are looking for quick cheap Asian food on your walkies around the city then you can't go wrong.

average takeaway-cum-restaurant. Good choice of food. Opens late. Generous portions. If you don't mind your Perspex chairs, then all is good for ya!
